How to write a check

Although there are alternatives, it is still important to know how to use a paper check. Sometimes using a check is the best way of making a payment. Here are six simple steps to write a check:

  • Date it. Start with writing the date on the top right of the check. The date should be the same day you sign the bottom of the check.
  • Pay to the Order of. Next, write the name of the recipient of the check on the “Pay to the Order of” line. You’ll want to double check to make sure you have the correct name of the person or organization before you send the check out.
  • $. After you have written out whom the check is going to, place the dollar amount of the check to the right of the dollar sign. You’ll want to write the exact dollar and cent amount.
  • Spell it out. Spell the numerical values and write the cents as a fraction of 100. If the check is for $100.50 it should be written as “One Hundred and 50/100”. If there is room left on the line after you have written out the dollar amount, draw a line through the open space.
  • Your John Hancock. Sign on the line at the bottom right corner of your check. This shows that you are endorsing the check. If it isn’t signed, the check will not be accepted.
  • What is it for? The last step is to fill out the memo section at the bottom left of the check. This space is for you to write the purpose of the check. It is optional to fill this out, but it can be a helpful way for you to remember the intention of the check.
