Fraud Alerts

PHISHING ALERT: Some GLCU members have reported phishing scams involving requests for a mobile wallet verification code. These scams are being presented via phone and email. Scammers are posing as GLCU representatives and requesting the following information:

  • Mobile Verification Code sent to the member via email or text
  • Card Pin Number
  • CVV
  • Expiration Date

As a reminder, GLCU will never ask for any of the information shown above when contacting members. If you believe you have received a request for your personal information that is not legitimate, do not respond to the requests, click on links, or open attachments. Report Computer Fraud

To report potential e-scams, please go to the Internet Crime Complaint Center and file a report. Note: the FBI does not send mass emails to private citizens about cyber scams, so if you received an email that claims to be from the FBI Director or other top official, it is most likely a scam.

Phishing Scams

  • Text Message
  • Internet
  • Web Connect
  • Mail

If you believe you have received a request for your personal information that is not legitimate, please do not respond to the requests, click on links, or open attachments. File a report with the Federal Trade Commission and contact GLCU locally at (847) 578-7000 or call toll free at (800) 982-7850.

If you have Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile cell phone service and you receive Phishing text messages, you can forward the messages to SPAM or (7726). These cell phone carriers can investigate the phishing attempts.

Gift Card Scams

Gift cards are for gifts, not for payments. They’re popular with scammers because they’re easy for people to find and buy, and they have fewer protections for buyers compared to some other payment options. They’re more like cash: once you use the card, the money on it is gone. 

If someone calls you and demands that you pay them with gift cards, you can bet that a scammer is behind that call. Once they have the gift card number and the PIN, they have your money. If someone asks you to pay them with gift cards:

  • Report it to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Report it even if you didn’t pay. Your report helps law enforcement stop scams.
  • You can also report it to your state attorney general.
  • If you lost money, also report it to local law enforcement. A police report may help when you deal with the card issuer.
