Hello members! Steve Bugg here again, President/CEO of your credit union, Great Lakes Credit Union. I have some great news to share with you about our Health Savings Accounts! As you know, healthcare costs are a continuing concern and we want to help you save more money. So we decided to increase the rate on our health savings accounts. You can now earn 2 percent, annual percentage yield on funds up to $2,000. Money in the account over $2,000 will earn one percent, annual percentage yield. We also eliminated the $10 annual fee! For those of you who aren’t quite sure what an HSA is, it is an account that you can qualify to receive tax-deductible contributions and tax-free distributions for all “qualified” (use air quotes) medical expenses. Keep in mind, you must be covered by a High Deductible Health Plan to take advantage of an HSA. Some “qualified” (use air quotes) expenses include doctor and dentist office visits, eye exams, glasses, hearing aids, prescription drugs and some over-the-counter medications, and a lot more. To learn more, go to IRS Publication number 969. The money in your HSA always belongs to you, even if you change employers. Plus, unused funds carry over from year-to-year so you never have to worry about losing your money.
